For more than a century our company has been standing for success in motion.
Whether in the Graf Zeppelin airship, the Daimler-Benz Silver Arrow or the 24-hour race of Le Mans: Motion and developments related to engines, technical springs and many other technical components, are what drives our company every day. The courageous footprints of the legendary company founder Sigmund Scherdel have encouraged many people to join and shape our company in the course of our corporate history. Even today, with the fourth SCHERDELgeneration, the signs are set for success, telling our success story:

Kom­merzien­rat Sig­mund Scherdel founds a wire draw­ing mill for the pro­duc­tion of piano strings in Mark­tred­witz. The spring steel wire is soon processed into spokes, flex­i­ble shafts, ten­sion, com­pres­sion and tor­sion springs.

Rudolf Diesel exper­i­ments with springs from SCHERDEL on the world’s first diesel engine.

SCHERDEL is devel­op­ing into one of the most impor­tant spring sup­pli­ers in the industry.

SCHERDEL springs are suc­cess­ful­ly used in the first road rac­ing cars.

Start-up of the first auto­mat­ic pro­duc­tion lines. The month­ly out­put of a series spring part exceeds 500,000 units for the first time.

The tech­no­log­i­cal advan­tage secures SCHERDEL a mar­ket share of up to 80% for impor­tant springs for the air­craft and auto­mo­tive industry.

Daim­ler-Benz Arrows, NSU blue Whales, BMW motor­cy­cles and Porsche rac­ing cars achieve their first post-war suc­cess­es with valve springs from SCHERDEL.

The Eng­lish com­pa­ny Van­der­well can take part in races with its Van­well rac­ing cars, which are lat­er to become very well known, only after valve spring frac­tures can be elim­i­nat­ed through con­struc­tive design con­sul­ta­tions.  Stir­ling Moss wins the Euro­pean Grand Prix on Van­well. Qual­i­ty prod­ucts from Mark­tred­witz gain inter­na­tion­al recognition.

Wal­ter Bach, a grand­son of the com­pa­ny founder, takes over the com­pa­ny management.

In the new­ly built Mark­tred­witz-Leu­ten­­dorf plant, valve spring pro­duc­tion starts for the first time on auto­mat­ic pro­duc­tion lines. The con­trol meth­ods used ensure the high qual­i­ty stan­dard of series-pro­­duc­­tion to this day.

Start of pro­duc­tion of pis­ton ring expanders. SCHERDEL is still the mar­ket leader in this seg­ment today.

SCHERDEL valve springs not only prove their worth on the road, but also on water. Dieter Quester sets three world records for Euro­pean sport boats on Lake Iseo in north­ern Italy.

BMW wins with its tour­ing car (valve springs from SCHERDEL) at Le Mans and in the Grand Prix of Tour­ing Cars at the Nürburgring.

The increas­ing impor­tance of the company’s own tool and machine con­struc­tion jus­ti­fies its inde­pen­den­den­cy. The Tool­ing Divi­sion is found­ed under the name of Comet GmbH, based in Berlin, and the machine con­struc­tion is found­ed under the name of AFEMA GmbH, based in Mark­tred­witz. Pro­duc­tion of spe­cial springs is start­ed at the Mark­tred­witz-Friedau plant.

Nel­son Piquet wins the For­mu­la 1 World Cham­pi­onship in a Brab­ham-BMW. The valve springs for the M Pow­er engine come from SCHERDEL.

Start of internationalization.

Share­hold­ings in the French spring man­u­fac­tur­er Her­ck­­el­bout-Daw­­son S.A. and its sub­sidiary Rhône-Ressorts S.A. and Spires 2000 S.A.R.L..

With the takeover of the com­pa­ny MECO (1988), an effi­cient tool shop for stamp­ing and bend­ing tech­nol­o­gy is estab­lished at the Walder­shof location.

In 1989, a new plant starts pro­duc­tion at the Walder­shof site in the field of stamp­ing and bend­ing tech­nol­o­gy. The build­ing with 4500 square meters of floor space is a suc­cess­ful exam­ple of con­tem­po­rary indus­tri­al architecture.

Fed­ern­werke Marien­berg GmbH is tak­en over by the SCHERDEL Group. This allows expan­sion to large springs, stamp­ing parts and seat components.

The com­pa­ny Moltec, the largest spring man­u­fac­tur­er in Por­tu­gal, is tak­en over.

Start-up of mod­ern sur­face tech­nol­o­gy instal­la­tions at the Mark­tred­witz site with state-of-the-art envi­ron­men­tal technologies.

Pro­duc­tion start-up at new loca­tions in Slo­va­kia and the Czech Repub­lic to open up East­ern Euro­pean mar­kets for tech­ni­cal springs and seat spring sys­tems for vehicles.
